Sam Salario Appointed to Second District Court of Appeal Judicial Nominating Commission

Brannock Humphries & Berman shareholder Samuel Salario, Jr. has been appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis to serve as a member of the commission responsible for vetting and nominating candidates for Florida’s Second District Court of Appeal.

Sam, himself a former appellate judge on the Second District, will begin service on the Judicial Nominating Commission (JNC) immediately. His term runs through July 1, 2024.

Florida’s twenty-eight JNCs—one for the Supreme Court, six for the six district courts of appeal, twenty for the twenty trial circuits, and one for judges of compensation claims statewide—select nominees to fill judicial vacancies within the Florida court system. Members of the JNC investigate applicants, interview those who are eligible, and recommend names to the Governor for his consideration.

The JNC must nominate no fewer than three and no more than six applicants to the Governor for any vacancy within that JNC’s territorial jurisdiction. The Governor then has sixty days to appoint a judge from among the nominees. The JNCs thus play an important screening function in maintaining the strength of Florida’s judiciary.
