Two Brannock Humphries & Berman Attorneys Speak at Multiday Florida Justice Association Seminar

Brannock Humphries & Berman shareholders Celene Humphries and Shea Moxon each gave extensive presentations as part of the 2023 John Romano Workhorse Seminar, one of the Florida Justice Association’s premier annual events.

The Workhorse Seminar is a five-day continuing legal education program held in Orlando. Offering more than 50 approved education credits for lawyers, the event brings together renowned trial attorneys and industry legal professionals to learn how to win trials, maximize settlements, and navigate changes in the law.

A regular speaker at the seminar, Celene’s topic this year focused on the law, strategy, and tactics regarding punitive damages in Florida state courts. Celene covered the reasons for requesting punitive damages, the legal standards and procedures that apply, the evidentiary basis that must be shown, common defense responses and techniques for combating them, and the ways the issue can be raised and argued on appeal.

This year, Shea joined Celene as a presenter, focusing his lecture on a little-known provision in the workers’ compensation statutes that can have major ramifications for personal-injury litigation. Shea explained how this provision can allow an insurance carrier with a workers’ compensation lien to take over a tort claim and suggested a laundry list of ways, both legal and practical, for trial lawyers to fight back on behalf of their clients.
